Puxi Grade 3: Practicing Text-Based Drama- Birds Startled by the Mere Twang of a Bowstring

Grade 3 Native Chinese students practiced a text-based drama Birds Startled by the Mere Twang of a Bowstring, which is a story about a famous person called Geng Lei in the State of Wei in the Warring States Period.

One day Gei Lei said to the king, ‘I can shoot down birds by simply plucking my bowstring.’ When the king expressed doubt, Geng Lei pointed his bow at a wild goose flying in the sky, twanged the bowstring, and the goose fell to the ground. This idiom means that if one has been frightened in the past, he may become paralyzed in a similar situation.

To know more about the personality of the characters in the text, students were required to work in a group and chose the characters for the drama by themselves. Students were filled with enthusiasm and tried their best to demonstrate the personality of each character in the story. On December 19, the best group of each class performed the drama on the stage of the auditorium in primary section.

Drama is a good way to increase students’ interest in Chinese learning and enhance their cultural accomplishment and aesthetic ability. We looked forward to their final performance!
