Puxi Grade 4: Make Your Own Survey
Puxi Grade 4: Make Your Own Survey
Data analysis is one of the most important mathematics skills that students need to learn and practice. After learning different graphs, fourth graders worked on a new project ‘Make Your Own Survey’.
Conducting a survey is a way to collect useful information and learn from the respondents. This project requires students to take a survey and try to analyze the data by themselves. Before making the survey, the first thing they should do is to determine what they are trying to find out, that is, establishing a goal. Then they need to decide on the best survey method to collect valuable information. Based on the target population and desired accuracy level, they also have to select the sample size. The best way to achieve this is to take a survey with good samples so as to know the whole group.
All students showed great interest in this project and selected very good topics to make their surveys. Some students focused on ‘Favorite Snacks of Grade Four Students’ and some of them preferred to know the ‘Favorite Games of Primary Students’. After asking questions and using tally marks to write down answers, they chose different kinds of graphs to present results. It is important to present survey results in a good way since we can make predictions based on these results. We are so glad to see that all fourth graders did a very good job in this project and they understood how to apply knowledge to practical use.
