An Interesting Economics Class

One of our many roles as teachers, and perhaps our most challenging one, is to continually find ways to keep students engaged in the learning process. This becomes more and more difficult as time goes on and our classes create their own patterns that we seem to stick to for much of our expectations and structure. I’m always on the lookout and trying to find simple ways to do things just a little bit differently, especially if it means the students can interact with the material in a new way, and ideally, a way that engages more of their senses. Our review day was just one example of that. We took our usual review day, where we all as a class sit down and attempt to recall as much of the material we’ve learned together and build a bank of review knowledge, but this time we displayed this recall outside in a large-than-life way with chalk and huge sidewalk “canvases.” I think the students enjoyed being able to be outside but also take this material that they’re used to writing in small print in their notebooks and drawing it out larger than they’ve ever done before. At the very least, they always enjoy the change in scenery.
