Grade 6: Calligraphy Lecture

Elegant art could be created by just a small brush, just like the music that flows across our fingers, and the ballet we dance on our tip-toes. Last week, Dennis Qi from the High School Division brought an amazing lecture to SHSID’s 5th and 6th graders, explaining calligraphy. He used his own calligraphy works to sohw us: perfect handwriting is engendered by persistency, just as iron is forged by the long days of the fire’s ferocity.

Dennis demonstrated the three most important styles of calligraphy: Regular Script, Cursive Writing, and Official Script. They all have their own characteristics. Regular Script is more modern and easy to understand and read. This kind of writing is like rows of soldiers lining up. Cursive Writing is free, and difficult to read. Even though this type of writing is difficult to read, it contains the most imagination. Chairman Mao loved to write Cursive Writing, and so it came to also be known as “Mao Writing”. Mao’s wild aspirations affected his handwriting, which in turn become wild. Imagine, when we are writing, that sometimes we are happy, and sometimes we are sad. The words we write down can depict our feelings. Try it! Let your mom and dad see your words and let them guess your feelings then.
