Grades 9-10: How to Manage Efficient Group Study in Classroom

Grades 9 and 10 teachers gathered in the Zhongxing Annex Building after school and attended a Chinese & Foreign teachers’ workshop on November 28, 2016. This workshop aimed to share effective teaching approaches in group working in the classroom.

The first speaker, Matthew Pardy, elaborated about his practice of grouping in English teaching. He assigned each student a role in the group and ordered them to work together to present the result of group work. This helped the teacher to control the pace of class, and all students were encouraged to involve themselves into discussion. Next, Yi Ding, a math teacher, shared a case of introducing group work in teaching sine function. She illustrated how students cooperated to use raw spaghetti to form the graph of the function, while students enjoyed the fun with such research work. And then, Mr. Michael called attention to the instructing role of teachers, who needed to check and understand the learning status of each group and kept rotating the learners’ roles and engage them with different groups.

In the end of the workshop, Professor Zuhui Xu, an experienced expert in educational science, and Mr. Feng Ma, the high school principal, whose were also present, expressed their views as the summary. Professor Xu pointed out that, with multiple efforts, SHSID is now trying to advance and deepen its innovative, modern education practices. The grouping practice best exemplified such efforts by contributing to the spirit of creativity and cooperative learning among students. Meanwhile, Mr. Ma, by telling a story in his classroom, emphasized the importance of exerting individual potential in group work.
