Grandpa Mike Is Here at SHSID

On November 18th 2016, SHSID welcomed Dr. Mike Lockett to campus to share his experience with Primary English Department teachers. Dr. Lockett, otherwise known as Grandpa Mike, is a well-known story teller, author and educator with over 40 years of experience in his field. He has presented various story telling workshops at prestigious schools all across the United States and Asia. On the last leg of his journey, Mike was able to provide our primary students and teachers with an experience they will never forget.

During the assemblies the students came in excited when they saw all the props and books up front. Grandpa Mike began by singing songs and playing his Dulcimer. The students were engaged and began singing the songs along with him. Mike’s enthusiasm was infectious and the students were captivated while he was telling stories. Many of his stories taught important lessons; such as the importance of communicating with others and never waste food or resources. Mike used teachers as live actors to help assist with the story telling. The students loved seeing their teachers up on stage acting! Mike was fun, engaging, and used age appropriate stories to show students how fun story telling can be! He was able to reach all age groups along with stories that would enhance the English level of our students.

In the evening SHSID primary teachers attended a professional development workshop from Dr. Mike Lockett about storytelling and storytelling techniques. This was a great event for our school as SHSID was able to open up our campus to teachers from other international schools. Mike taught the teachers strategies on boosting student’s vocabulary, understanding, and the importance of storytelling. He provided important skills for teachers to use in the classroom to enhance student learning. Teachers were very impressed with Dr. Mike Lockett and enjoyed his active and engaging seminar.
