SHSID & Yamaha: Signing Ceremony

On the morning of November 16th, we visited the Yamaha Music Centre in Jing’an District to attend a signing ceremony. By the time we arrived, we were guided through their classrooms; there were a number of small chambers for private tutoring as well as several relatively large rooms containing a dozen electric pianos. The manager who gave us the overall description of their music education program consistently emphasized that their main concern is not serving eminent pianists but nourishing musical interest among children. Therefore they start their program by introducing children to the joy of being with music, while waiting for their love of music to flourish. This reminds me of Aristotle’s claim that a virtuous man is a lover of virtue. He goes on to say that virtue can only be acquired through virtuous acts, just as a man can name himself a musician only after he plays an instrument.
