Grade 8: Volunteers from SHSID Received Orientation at the Degas Exhibition

This semester, as all kinds of service-learning groups proudly took their rightful places on the school’s schedule.

SHSID has launched various off-campus service-learning programs, offering students a much wider array of options to attend. Among them was the Degas Exhibition, which got more than 60 enthusiastic volunteer participants.

On November 11th, about thirty students were ushered onto one school bus during PE class and arrived at the Degas Exhibition. These students are some of the volunteers that will serve a total of 20 hours at this exhibition by serving as ticket collectors, question respondents, exhibition patrols, and so on. It was not an easy task to train thirty students in less than an hour, but we managed to get through it smoothly. The staff instructed us that this exhibition displays the works of Edgar Degas, one of the most famous French impressionists in the 19th century. Growing up in a wealthy family, he was enriched by experiences such as going to the opera and equitation, which had a great impact on his art. The staff also explained that this is the first time the Degas Exhibition has come to China. It is an award-winning exhibition, worth millions. Most of the exhibition consists of Degas’s original manuscripts– documents with a value equivalent to his masterpieces. This is an academic exhibition, because it displays sculptures and sketches rather than paintings. After the instruction, the staff walked us through it.

Seeing all these amazing works was breathtaking. All of the students now share one common goal: we will work together to make this Degas Exhibition a success.
