Grade 6: Yishan Charity Foundation Came to School

On November 10th, after we finished all the tests, we were given a lecture by Mr. Chang on the Yishan Foundation, which is where part of our money from the Charity Fair went. The Yishan Foundation was founded by Mr. Chang and his college friends together to help poor kids from Dali get a better education.

He gave us an example. He asked us whether if we know what sea horses are. Well, I guessed everyone knows. But actually, the kids in Dali don't have things like iPads, so they can’t do any research if they don't know something. All they have are books and maybe if things are a little bit better, they might have TV. They don't even have schools, all they have is what they call a “teaching spot”.

There’s only one class at each of the “teaching spots” and all the kids near that “teaching spot” will be going there every day to gain some knowledge. No matter what your age is, you study together with all the other kids. The reason why they have a lot of “teaching spots” instead of schools is because the kids live in mountain areas. It will take a long time for them to get to school across the mountains. It might take more than 2 hours by walking and it is also very dangerous. Even though they have classrooms, the condition is very bad. They don't have whiteboards or projectors like we do. All they have are desks and chairs that weren't properly made.

So, the money we sent was to help the kids buy some library books with pictures so it will be easier for them to understand and to read. I believe we all wish that all kids will receive a good education, and that our money can actually help them to achieve that.
