Grade 8: Love Expressing with Music Notes – Group of “Music for Patients” offering Mini Charity Conc
On October 28th, last Friday afternoon, a mini music concert was held in the Outpatient Hall in Pudong Renji Hospital. The beautiful and melodious music attracted a lot of patients and their families to stop and listen. Classical music lovers would easily recognize that there were some masterpieces by Schubert, Tchaikovsky and Chopin. Why was there a musical performance in the hospital? The answer was on a signboard next to the piano: it was a mini charity concert performed by the group of "Music for Patients" from Grade 8 of SHSID.
As one of the students-organized projects of grade 8 off-campus Service Learning courses, the Group of “Music for Patients” was established by Kingsley Poon of class 8(2). The purpose of this group activity was to relieve the patients’ high tension and deep worries through a live music performance while they are in the hospital to see the doctors.
A personal experience helped the germination of the idea of holding a small concert in a hospital. Around mid September, under the encouragement of the doctor, Kingsley was humming his favorite classical music while receiving an emergency suture surgery on his right hand. He is convinced that music can greatly eliminate the tension of a patient, relieve one’s anxiety, and help to create the mutual trust between patients and doctors. From the stage of idea generation, activity planning and implementation, Kingsley has received help and support from Grade 8 teachers, parents, students and the management team of Renji Hospital. Terence, Dolly, Helen, Sammi and Chantel joined the group on the first day when the project was announced in the school’s Service Learning Portal. A team full of youthful spirit, the "Music for Patients" group was formed by these 5 initial members.
The mini charity concert lasted nearly 3 hours. These six teenage musicians played a total of 12 pieces of classical piano and Cello masterpieces, including "Turkey March", "Autumn Song in D minor", "Ave Maria and “Fantasie Impromptu”. Although the mini concert was held in the outpatient hall, each musician played the pieces with great dignity and sincerity that was appreciated and praised by many patients and their families. It seemed as if the mini concert was live in a grand music hall. A grey-haired grandmother even enjoyed every piece from the beginning to the end by enthusiastic applause.
Thanks to the audience's warm applause at the end of the concert, all members were inspired, and felt great satisfaction and joy. Immersed in the atmosphere of classic music the group played, every one of patients, their families, doctors and hospital staff looked peaceful and happy upon hearing the music. An aged male patient said: “The students from SHSID are really unique and outstanding. I can see they posses great versatility and love. Through their music I feel the hope and joy. The pain seems to have gone far away. I really appreciated them and hope they can come to the hospital often to help as many as possible people here."
Health is priceless while love is infinite and expressed through musical notes. The "Music for Patients" group activities will continue!
