A Letter Without Word-Transfer Environmental Protection Idea through Painting

“Leave an inch of land to posterity to cultivate.”

“Being gentle to the earth is being gentle to yourself.”

These ever-present environmental protection slogans remind us that we should protect the environment and protect the earth. But do we human beings really do that?

Students from Puxi’s Grade 3 Native Chinese Class learned lesson 9 "The Story in a Small Village” in the fourth week. In the story, a beautiful village was covered in lush green vegetation. The river there was crystal clear, the sky was deep blue, and the air was fresh and sweet. But because of deforestation, a flood wrought havoc and drowned the villagers. The children were very affected by this story, so they tried to take the opportunity to use their brush to write a letter without words to the humankind.

In these letters, the children could choose the theme, for example: ‘To Protect the Earth’, ‘No Deforestation’, ‘Cherishing Water Resources’, ‘Protection of Rare Animals’, ‘Garbage Classification’, and so on. The children could also choose the form, for example: manual, clip art, objects combination, and so on. From their wonderful posters we can see their understanding of environmental protection. A kid used a year scale marked drinking water bucket to represent humankind’s water resources, and by having water continuously flowing from the drinking water machine represents wasted water, to urge humans to save water. A kid painted a fashionable woman on a poster wearing a fur coat, leather handbag and leather shoes. Around her are crying animals. This artwork appealed urgently that people should protect animals, and not use animals’ fur to make clothes and handbags.

After making a nicely designed poster in the Chinese show & tell class in October 10th, the children showed their "letters" in front of all the class. They first guessed the meaning of their classmates’ "letter", and then communicated their intention with each other. They learned a lot in this period.

Through a "letter without words" project design and exhibition activity, teachers hoped the kids to set up awareness of environment protection, and start from their own lives and the little things around them to become a green kid.
