Career Day: A Time to Dream and Reflect

Almost everyone here at SHSID has pondered or been asked this question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” It’s a pretty intimidating question for many of us, but it’s also exciting as we imagine what endless possibilities and opportunities await us in the future.

On Wednesday, October 26, juniors and seniors of the big SHSID clan were able to jump firsthand into the excitement when a company of parents and volunteers from an assortment of careers visited Xianmian Building for the event known as “Career Day”. The enthusiastic speakers gave vivid and engaging presentations about their careers, sharing their workplace tips and tricks for getting to the highest rung in their career ladders. Some parents even brought prizes for attentive students who were able to correctly answer their questions. The parents’ professional language and words of encouragement filled students with inspiration, making many think once more about possible future career paths.

Most of the students thought Career Day was very informative and fun for them. “[Career Day is] pretty cool! I learned a lot...[and] the [parents/volunteers] were enthusiastic! It was great!” said an excited Jeff He from 11(1)B. Jeff is a hardworking and humorous IB student. During Career Day, Jeff was able to take a break from his study life and explore the interesting careers around him, where he could put his talents to good use. Jeff’s Career Day experience was one of many where students found out about jobs they could do with passion in the future.

On the other hand, many of the speakers who came to SHSID stated that they also enjoyed Career Day very much. SHS|TV, SHSID’s official news channel, was able to secure an interview with Mr. Chen Litong. Mr. Chen is a professional lawyer and a respected veteran in his field, with work experience in both China and the United States. He remarked that SHSID students are engaging and inquisitive. “I like them,” he said amicably in the interview. When asked about what factors make a person successful at his/her career, Mr. Chen replied that an ambitious employee should “make lots of friends, be polite, and have [career-related] skills”. He also gave his congratulations to the seniors, many whom applied to world class universities and are waiting for the “good news” to come home.

By paying close attention to the speakers, many students discovered interesting new paths and new subjects to daydream about on Career Day. The speakers, delighted in sharing details about their employment, also enjoyed the event to the fullest. All good things, however, always come to an end. After countless oratories and presentations were made in the numerous classrooms of Xianmian Building, the soothing 3:50 bell finally rang. Career Day, a day of informativeness and inspiration, finally came to a close. The students packed up their belongings and headed to Lawson to grab after-school snacks. While digging through bags of crunchy potato chips, many SHSIDers saw the light of their bright futures, and began, for the first time, plotting how to get there. Career Day allowed many SHSID students to take a break from rigorous academic life and think about issues that matter in the long run. It also served as a wake-up call for a special breed of people: a call to fight in the brutal materialistic war of reality instead of virtual shootouts occurring on a LED screens.
