Puxi Grade 1: Science Class

Recently all the first graders learned a lot in a fun way in their science class.

Living and non living things was the main topic this week. The children loved learning about different animal life-cycles. The teachers concentrated on the butterfly life cycle, creating their own little cycle on a paper plate. The students have also been learning about the different types of animal groups: Mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, amphibians, and insects. They are making their own poster with examples of animals from each group.

Science has been very interesting this week. On Monday, Oct, 24, the students learnt about how animals find and eat food, and food chains. Each of the students created their own animal food chain. On Friday they learnt about how animals stay safe. The students were particularly interested in seeing how different animals camouflage themselves. The students did a mini-project where the students had to camouflage a fish on newspaper. They loved trying to find each others fish!

The topic for this week has been animal habitats. The students have had a chance to get to know the other grade one teachers, as we have been rotating classrooms for this activity. Each classroom teacher was assigned a habitat: Forest, Ocean, Pond, Artic, Desert and Grasslands. The teacher played music or showed them a video related to the habitat and gave them important information to know about each one. The students had a small habitat book in which they needed to write notes about the different habitats.

It was fun for both the teachers and students! The teachers hope to teach the students science in an interesting way.
