Grade 9: Chemistry Day

SHSID held a fascinating chemistry activity on October 25th, 2016. This date was picked to commemorate the birthday of famous chemist Mole. Stepping into the Zhongxing Building in the early morning of the day, one would have found a fun atmosphere brought on by colorful balloons and posters, indicating it would be a most joyful chemistry day.

The first hit of the day was “element lottery”. During the first four periods, cards of chemical elements from the periodic table were spread hidden across the Zhongxing Building. The students were challenged to collect them and answer questions about chemistry written on the back of them. If they answered the question correctly, they had the chance to exchange the card with prizes, which were so attractive that many Grade 9 students were completely thrilled and searched every corner of the building.

During lunch break, multiple tables and stations were set up in front of Zhongxing Building. This activity included a series of engaging games and experiments that 9th and 10th grade students could enjoy while acquiring knowledge through the process of playing. Chemistry teachers displayed interesting experiments such as “alchemy”, “invisible ink”, soap making and a mini “bomb”. Games such as memorizing the periodic table and whack-a-mole also drew plenty of students. The helium gas experiment was one of the most popular stations. Inhaling gas made the students’ voices incredibly high pitched– it was really funny!

Another activity that was widely enjoyed by Grade 9 students was a lecture regarding “Chemistry in coffee brewing”. Mr. Hao Sun, the lecturer and chemistry teacher as well, showed his profound knowledge in coffee brewing and explained the magic chemical changes during the process. Meanwhile, the audience were happy to have the chance to enjoy the freshly ground coffee made by Mr. Sun.

Overall, the chemistry day was a massive success since it was a great combination of chemical knowledge and fun, inspiring Grade 9 students to explore further into the world of “elements”.
