Grade 8: Student Representatives Attended a Biology Lecture

On October 13, 2016, the famous Rutgers professor Richard H. Ebright- who is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences- came to Shanghai’s Institute for Biological Science to give a lecture. The lecture was mainly on transcription and transcription activation, or in other words how information is transmitted from a DNA strand to an RNA strand. SHSID students went to listen to the lecture not just to learn vital and high-level information, but also to discuss and learn what brought this great expert along the way to success.

After the lecture, there was a lunch meeting with the eager students and the professor. Through the meeting, college students asked questions about their own projects and also asked about natural phenomenon, one student even asked about the professor’s opinion on genetically modified food! A student from SHSID asked the professor what had sparked the idea of becoming a biologist, and he told the story of his remarkable childhood: including tagging monarch butterflies at the age of twelve, and even conducting his very own experiments! Professor Ebright also earned many prizes as a child and works at the lab every summer with permission granted by the government.

The students also took a tour around the institution and saw the different types of equipment for biology and chemistry, and see the workspaces of real scientists. They learned that many biological materials are preserved by liquid nitrogen, and many chemical reactions cannot occur in an environment with water and oxygen.

After taking in the mind blowing information, and an inspiring talk with the professor, the SHSID students surely learned a lot from this experience and also from professor Ebright.
