Puxi Grade 3: Responsible Halloween Spending

In our daily life, counting money and change correctly is an important skill. However, our young kids have little first-hand experience with money, so may lack the skills required to count change properly. To develop students’ understanding of money, Grade 3 teachers assigned an interesting math project to the students.

Each student had a certain amount of money. They were provided with a list of Halloween decoration items, among which they could purchase 5 to 8 items they liked in order to decorate their Halloween houses. They needed to cut the pictures of the item out, paste them to the house, and color it in. Also, they needed to add a title for the project. They were supposed to answer a series of math questions, such as find the total amount of money you have, use number sentences to find out how much you spend, find out how much change you will get, and use the least amount of bills and coins to show it.

Creative students gave their project some interesting names such as Haunted House, Spooky Castle, and Monster Jail. Their decoration items ranged from dreadful skulls, scary spiders, mysterious witch hats and broomsticks, horrible bats, all the way to terrifying ghosts. Look at their projects: night falls, witches gather together, and ghosts roam the world. Jack-o-lanterns, which are hollowed-out pumpkins with a face carved on one side and candles placed inside, gave their faces a spooky glow.

By purchasing Halloween decorations and decorating their Halloween houses, kids not only cultivated their handwork skills, but they also applied what they learned in math class. They really enjoyed this math project!
