Grade 9: Chinese Lecture Session

From this semester on, SHSID high school sets off a special lecture session in Chinese class. With the purpose of imparting to students more cultural knowledge and advancing their understanding of Chinese literature, the session would invite Chinese teachers to organize a series of lectures with different subjects, ranging from ancient Chinese civilization, folk custom, literature history, to studies of important literary works. It also allows students to delve deeper in the ocean of Chinese culture and literature.

On October 11th, 2016, the 9th grade native Chinese students listened to the 1st lecture given by Ms. Yi Gao on ancient Chinese architecture in Xianmian Annex Auditorium. In the lecture, a brief and vivid illustration of 5 different kinds of traditional roofs was provided with various examples and pictures. When browsing famous architectures in China and neighboring countries, students felt like taking a journey across time and space. The students also learned the architecture hierarchy symbolized by small figures on roof tops and the color of roof tiles. The significance of roof in traditional Chinese culture lies in such symbolization and conveys a clear message about the usage of the building and the social status of its dweller.

The lecture not only brought knowledge and insights to students, but also fun and joy. Students deepened mutual communication via discussion and learned more from each other. The students were fully intrigued and had great expectation of the following lectures.
