Essay Workshop I: How to Write a British Personal Statement

At lunchtime on September 29th, Mr Angus from the SHSID Writing Centre met with high school students planning on attending university in the UK. These students were in need of a little extra guidance, since the vast majority of students and teachers in SHSID focus exclusively on American universities and American-style personal statements. A good number of students showed up, curious about what to expect.

Mr Angus emphasised the evidence-based nature of the British personal statement. “American essays are like stories, or Hollywood movies,” he said, “while British essays are more like a CV.” He also spent time talking about the nature of UCAS, the centralised system which manages all applications to every university in the UK. At the end of the session students had a chance to ask questions and clarify any confusion.

The talk was a big success, and Mr Angus is now looking forward to seeing the soon-to-be UK students dropping into the Writing Centre to hand in their drafts!
