Grades 11-12: Back to Hongmei Primary School

On September 23rd, in the afternoon, Director. Liu, Teacher Ma, and the representatives of SHSID returned to Hong Mei Primary School to commence the community service activities.

The community service activities involve various kind of art including textile art and paper folding, and also English. Judith Luo and Maggie Huang from the Art Club volunteered to run the art teaching trip. When we first entered the room, the students were a bit nervous and distant, probably due to this being a first time meeting. However, once we asked them to draw something on the paper, the whole classroom suddenly became warm and joyful. They held their pencils and drew simple pictures on their pieces of white paper. We ‘patrolled’ the class room and asked each individual pupil about their creative ideas. We also tried to teach the children as many basic drawing skills as possible. We hope our interactions will inspire in these children an interest in art, and a passion for painting.

Our short teaching event finished upon the ringing of the school bell. Afterwards, we found that our teachers' voices had left our throats a little dry. We felt teaching is really not easy and is something which takes hard work. But when we saw the smiling faces of our little friends as they showcased their creative work, we felt the satisfaction which comes from helping others. It is worth the effort.
