Grade 8: Tug-Of-War
Grade 8: Tug-Of-War
Tug-Of-War is a sport that puts two teams against each other in a test of strength. The two teams pull on opposite ends of a rope, with the goal being to bring the rope a certain distance in one direction against the force of the opposing team's pull.
Eventually, the much-anticipated day of the Tug-Of-War arrived. Four days prior, our homeroom teacher had reviewed our strategy for the Tug-Of-War. They told us how to hold our stance, and showed us where we should stand. We all wanted to win.
On the day of the Tug-Of-War, the minutes before P.E class seemed to drag by. Finally, P.E class came, and we all headed out to the sunny basketball court. The first two classes put on their gloves and got ready. When the whistle blew, the two classes pulled. The students who weren’t competing and their homeroom teachers cheered them on. Slowly, one of the teams started winning. The whistle blew again. One of the classes had won. When it was my class’s turn to play, we all nervously gathered around the rope.
When I was watching other people play, I hadn’t felt nervous about my turn. Now, when I put my gloved hands on the rough, thick rope, I felt nervous. Besides me, my classmates shifted in their spots, and adjusted their stance. Tense, we waited for the whistle, and had to be reminded several times the game hadn’t started yet. The whistle blew. We pulled, and struggled to gain a little ground. I know my classmates tried our best, but little by little, our feet slid toward the opposing team’s side, and we lost. We stood by, and watched the other classes win and lose. On my class’s second turn, we also lost. Exhausted, we continued to watch the other classes, and cheered our friends and classmates on.
Now, two classes have prevailed to the final round, 8(6) and 8(9). Win or lose, we all have had our fun. Even though my class lost twice, I know we didn’t go down without a fight, and neither did the other classes who didn’t reach the final.
