Grade 8: Service Learning Program—The Art of Serving Society

As the students of Grade 8 address their last year in middle school and the burden of being the oldest students in their building, the school community has begun to educate this new generation of young contributors on how to give back to those around them.

The all new service-learning classes are now a welcome new part of the Grade 8 schedule, offering students a wide array of options to choose from. Those with the most caring hearts are now reading buddies for younger students in the lower grades; athletes with the most passionate sporting spirit can now become P.E. teacher’s assistants; scholars who excel in linguistics and other studies are now tutors, librarians, lab auxiliaries, and editors for the school newspaper; eagle-eyed observers are on stand-by as photographers, ready to take the perfect shot; and advisory consultants have been nominated as members of the service-learning council.

Although already implemented for 2 years, this previously optional program has now become a compulsory course. Students seem happy in selecting community-roles suited to their abilities to the extent that a sizable amount of them have even selected more than the mandatory minimum number of classes. With this kind of enthusiastic volunteer spirit, we could see a huge improvement to our little community here in SHSID.
