SHSID Science Fair 2016

On June 2nd, we held the science fair in front of Zhongxing Building. There were 11 groups participating this competition. Students signed in the competition one by one and began to prepare their topics since May. According to the PPTs they made before the competition, every group had prepared their works/experiments well. They described their magic shows intricately and vividly, which made more and more students look forward to their shows on science fair.

The theme of the Science Fair is the “Magic of Science,” and many different advanced and innovative approaches to science that represent students’ vision on science, technology, innovation, and the future.

On the day of science fair, various projects were displayed at the Science Fair, each offering a unique vision on science and technology of our times. Some groups did the chemistry experiment to create a fantastic chemical reaction. Some groups used the principles of physics to show us the other side, which we hadn't discovered it before, of a common item. Jeffery Tsui and his team built a 3D printer, which The Economist calls as the technology with the potential to spark a third Industrial Revolution. The team managed to print a plastic bullet during the fair. The group led by Allen Xie, brought a smart IV controller that aims to improve the use efficiency of medical resources in hospitals. Different experiments, such as creating holograms and producing foam, were performed and wowed its audience with its “magical” effects. All of them tried their best to finish their magic shows and let other students enjoy the surprising side of science. They all showed us their passion towards the science through their endeavor to their works and shows.

During the competition, students voted for their 2 favorite groups. The assessment teachers evaluated all the aspects of their works seriously. In the end, Allen Xie, Wilson Gao and Lee Yihong won first prize for their smart IV controller. Teresa Xiao, Joella Cheung and Audney Guo received the second prize, and Sydnei and Jackie received the third prize. Special awards were given to various projects. Overall, the science fair was a complete success, and students displayed their own views on technology and science, offering their original and unique take on making the world a better place. The finish of the participants' shows brought a satisfactory end to this science fair.
