Grade 7-8: Music Composition Club

This semester, a brand new club was started in SHSID- Music Composition. Music Composition seems like a very distant thing to most, possible only for great genius such as Mozart or Beethoven. However, through the teacher, Mr. Madisen’s guidance, the students learned that music composition is, in Mr. Madisen’s words “like a sport- when you know the rules, it becomes easy.” In the first few classes, Mr. Madisen taught the students some basic music theories, such as the classification of chords, major triads etc. The students all had different preferences for music- some liked piano, some preferred guitar and such- so it was decided for the club to divide into small groups every time to pursue their own individual composition. The teacher would come around, checking on student’s progress and giving suggestions. By the end, every group all had a different music piece for their instruments.
