Grade 9 - 10: Teachers’ Workshop

On June 13th, 2016, a teachers’ workshop was held in the Zhongxing building. All foreign teachers and Grade 9 and 10 homeroom teachers attended to study classroom management and teaching strategies shared by three presenters.

At first, Mr. Kevin Alt introduced his favorite teaching skill: group work, which aims to raise the self awareness of students and enhance the active study process through classroom activities such as poster making, storyboard, debate, mock trial, play, etc. Students are engaged in groups to solve problems by themselves. These activities can be used in different subjects. For example, a mock trial of a historic event helps the students to form strong views and learn to judge the event with logical thinking.

The next speaker was Mr. Joshua Pickart, who shared his experience under the special circumstance in the end of the semester and the problem-solving strategies. By pointing out that the pinnacle of accumulative stress and the beautiful picture of the upcoming vacation influenced most students and teachers as well near the end of the semester, he stressed the importance to deal with the problem in the interest of a smooth classroom management. Mr. Pickart talked about several activities to help students concentrate in classes – write a letter to oneself, class awards, cultural communication with multi-media technology, etc.

Ms. Mengdi Cui from the Teacher Advisor office was the last to make the presentation. She introduced the MBTI – a psychological theory that focuses on testing personality. It includes 4 contractive groups of indexes that divided people into 16 personality categories. Learning these categories helps to understand and foresee the psychological statement and inclination of action of a person.
