Grade 8: Service Learning Extension Program: We teach English
Grade 8: Service Learning Extension Program: We teach English
Our members of service learning extension program go deep into Shanghai’s local community, school and NGO organizations to provide service. One group’s aim is to read English books to Chinese children, teaching English by providing an amiable English environment. Through the process, they collaborate with each other, learn through experience, and do their best to aim for the beneficial english class. This is a valuable opportunity for those who have a passion for community service and teaching! It also helps students enhance their organization skills, teamwork and the ability to respond to various situations. Active Participants now include Teresa Ma from 8(6), Kellie from 8(3), Claire Xu from 8(2), and Laurie Yang from 8(11). A total of 6 reading events were held. Last Friday, 03/06/2016, was the very last service activity for this year but the team is certain to continue this event as they move on to high school.
They reflected after each event, and gradually improved the program. “Teach to Learn” proved to be very popular. “Many kids’ parents said that their children loved us, and told me to carry on this program for next semester.” More students also asked to join. From community service, they grew more confident in their power to influence the world. “The small program is steadily expanding. A dozen of SHSID students have gained valuable service experience, and the children have already learned from us. My first step is small, but the next step will be a leap”
