High School: A Symposium with Parents

On the afternoon of June 7th, 6 parents of 9th graders were invited to a symposium with Director Liu Min, Principal Ma Feng, College Counselors Zhang Li and Zhang Nan, and 6 Grade 12 students present.

In the symposium, Principal Ma answered parents’ questions about GPA, information on college entrance, college acceptance, reform of curriculum and extra-curricular activities. Principal Ma also offered some suggestions to the parents, encouraging them to put more efforts in guiding their kids to work on what truly interests them, so that they can choose courses that suit them the best; he also asked parents to put more emphasis on education which has a life-long effect on their kids rather than solely on college entrance. One thing all must bear in mind is that parents should not spread uncorroborated information that might put stress on other parents and students. It was also mentioned that since the data of college acceptance have made some parents nervous, and, as a matter of fact, the rate does not truly help individual students in their college application directly, the school might only release list of students accepted in future.

Director Liu introduced to parents what the school has done to help students, like PTSA, Teacher Advisor Office and the passport to keep record of activities students have taken part in over 4 years.

Grade 12 students drew from their experience to advise students to make plan for their future studies and life. Like when electing courses, students' interests and ability should be of paramount importance rather than the level of the course. The students also said that parents’ concern for their kids’ studies is quite understandable, but only the students themselves can realize the plans and expectations.

Through the symposium, parents get a better knowledge of what and how the teachers do to help students, and they highly praised the college counseling work of SHSID.

The Principal hopes that parents present could spread the essential agreements made during the symposium to other parents.
