Middle School: A Special Service Learning Trip to Sunflower Organization

On Friday, May 27th, a dozen members from middle school Service & Learning program went on a volunteering trip to Sunflower, an organization for children who suffer from dysfunctional families due to domestic violence and drug abuse. True to its name, while all the other students went on our annual field trips, students of service learning went to Sunflower to paint sunflowers murals. Over the course of four hours, we painted various sunflowers on the walls, and it was great fun. We discovered many hidden artists among our peers, and we made a mess out of everything. Yet, most importantly, it was good to know, at the end, that we managed to help, even if it was only a little bit, children who come from broken homes. The children who go to Sunflower aren’t children blessed with loving families, and Sunflower is an organization where the children can seek refuge and escape from the pain of their households.

Students of service learning went there to decorate Sunflower’s environment and we painted the murals. Children from problematic households need help not just from adults, but also other children. Although we did not do something immensely significant, we helped make their place of escape somewhat more beautiful, and therefore created more hope as the children could know that they had a place to go to where they did not need to be haunted by the terrors of their families.
