Grade 11: Company Visitin—-Dow Campany

On May 25, 2016, a bunch of SHSIDers, composed of 17 juniors and 1 teacher, went to the famous DOW Chemical Engineering Company for their Career Day. Just before we set out, the bus was filled with joy and excitement, expecting the visit to be fresh and surprising. We chatted and laughed, discussed and asked and after just 20 minutes, we arrived at the DOW company.

The two DOW staff guided us through the entire company from the bottom to the top. We were shocked and fascinated. Seeing marvelous labs in each office with bundles of chemicals and machines for analysis, we lost ourselves in such a high-tech operation. The staff introduced numerous DOW products and materials that are commonly used in everyday life – plastics, insoles, casing, etc. We personally witnessed the DOW employees wearing lab coats in different labs and carrying out various experiments with some filtering impurities, some adding chemicals and some analyzing experimental data. Despite the labs, we also visited the gym, the conference rooms, and the cafeteria.

It was a brilliant day for students to experience the company in person with their interests in chemistry or engineering. It was somehow unfortunate that we were not allowed to take pictures; however, the visit to DOW was definitely a fresh new lesson to us. There were several students who kept passionately asking the staff questions, expecting to learn more beyond their initial understanding. DOW inspired passion for engineering and chemistry, and it enlightened the students to see a high-tech company with fabulous labs and machines.
