Honors Student Candidates of Class of 2016

On May 6th, 10 Honors Student Candidates presented their passions and reflection of high school. Honor students are selected for their contribution to the school community and their diverse passions. In 6 minutes of presentation and 2 minutes of Q&A, the finalists discussed the impact they have left in SHSID and their hopes for the future. The audience consisted of 6 student voters, a parent, 4 teachers, Director Liu and Principal Ma.

Paul Park shared his love for dancing and soccer. When asked how these activities influenced his character, Paul talked about the responsibility he assumed for choreographing the IB class and the inversion of roles when he taught homeroom teachers Ms. Gu and Mr. Yang Bi the dances.

Raymond said, “In all, I survived high school”. From only having 5 members in his Math Club to achieving regional, international recognition in math competitions, Raymond expressed that the confidence and leadership abilities he gained were more important.

Sarah Lin is an aspiring lawyer who founded the SHSID’s mock trial team and is president of the debate club. She emphasized her hope for students continuing to participate in these activities. When asked that if SHSID were a person, what would s/he be like, Sarah answered “strict” for the discipline and motivation s/he has encouraged.

Cheryl Jiang’s goal is to provide a cost-efficient solution for cancer. She has researched the use of garlic in cancer treatment and is also in the Math Club and vice editor-in-chief of SHSID|Times. As the leader of the Campus History Club, she also helped publicize SHSID’s campus history. Cheryl has also tutored students from the Math Club and helped them achieve great awards.

Jeffrey Fu, an aspiring politician/lawyer, focused his speech on his journey through SHSID. From World Scholar‘s Cup, to debate, Shang Zhong Cup and SHSID|Times. Music and piano are important parts of his life where he can freely express his emotions. Jeffrey also thanked those who have helped him grow, especially Zixing Gu, his NSDA debate partner and his teachers.

Koken Ishii designed the LED screen background for the 2015 and 2016 Talent Show and the 2015 Art Festival. He created the FaceOff Club where students learn to digitally apply makeup, and the SourceFilm club to create game videos.

Daniel Chu hopes to become a film director one day, where he believes he can integrate media and social justice. As co-president of the International Affairs Association, he has coached and led teams to compete in several Model UN conferences. He is also the viola section leader in the SHSID and SHS string orchestra.

Bobo Wong is an artist and uses her art to inspire reflection in her audience. To her, art means freedom. She co-hosted her own art exhibit, “Moment of Truth”, and was touched to hear her audience tell her they want to be artists like her. She designed school activity awards as the Director’s Assistant and looks forward to bringing artwork to a greater audience in the future.

Anna Tsai loves working with people and will study hotel management in college. Her internship experiences in catering allowed her to meet people of all kinds and respond to sudden changes. She volunteered at the 1st Academic Hexathlon and helped manage competitors.

The last speaker, Elaine Shen is the president and honorary member of the ASB. She led the organization of the 2015 Prom. She is the Director of Photography for SHSID|Times and has won numerous photography awards. Like others, her awards are too many to list; however, when asked about what she values most in her high school experience, she answered: “friends, Ms. Liu Qin and honestly, everyone”.

During the Q&A session, many were asked what kind of impact/impression they hope to leave to the rising seniors and younger students. Apart from imparting tips and skills, regardless in debate or volunteering, it is ultimately leaving the impression of someone approachable, someone who can help.

The judges were impressed with the students' work throughout high school. Director Liu commented that she was proud of all of the finalists and Principal Ma looked forward to seeing more students become well-rounded and contribute more to the school.
