Grade 8: Girl Scouts’ English teaching

Eighth Graders Joyce Xu, Grace Liu and Yuka S. joined Girl Scouts to expand their after-school activities. They quickly found they had the same interest in teaching. To serve the society, they searched for chances to make their dream come true.

The 3 little teachers have 12 students. Early every Sunday morning, the 3 girls would overcome all difficulties to arrive at class in time. With no teaching experience, the 3-hour class is a good challenge to them. The biggest problem was the class behavior of students. Maybe because the teachers are the same age with the students, the 1st class was such a mess. No one was paying attention to what the young teachers said. Some students played cell phone or iPad, someone drew pictures in the paper, etc. So how to draw students’ attention was the most important task. With careful observation, girls found out that though these kids were languid in studying, and they were extremely aggressive when contending others. Girls then started to figure out solutions. They held vocabulary competition during the 2nd period of our class, made bursary for good performers and gave some small prizes to the winners or winning team. The good thing is that all the students’ English scores have been improved, and they now are eager to have this English learning chance.

What girls got most from this teaching experience is that teaching is a really tough job. It’s not only about engaging the students in learning in the class, but also about preparation. Teachers deserve respect. They also learnt that leadership is important, but what’s more important is to align teaching with students’ interest, which should be the more essential part in teaching. Now 3 young teachers have made friends with all students, and they often chat via WeChat in and after classes. The improvement in students' English scores proved the 3 young teachers’ efforts.

Although their teaching project will be finished soon this month, what they have learnt and understood during these 2 terms will greatly benefit them in future.
