Grade 8: Students Performed Well in National Debate and Speech Association Shanghai Round

Over the weekend, an exciting and important competition took place in the SHSID campus - the National Debate and Speech Association Shanghai Round. On May 14th, 190 teams of two students each from all across Shanghai gathered together to participate in this event. Students were divided into two divisions- novice division and open division. In those divisions, four rounds were held on the first day. Based on their performance, students were scored by a judge, who would then announce the winner and would give expert feedback on how each speaker could improve in the future. Teams were then paired with other teams that had the same win-loss record. In the first round, everyone was tense and unsure, though gradually the speakers grew more comfortable and showed their true potential. By the end of the first day, the top 32 teams, who were then qualified to enter the knock-out match on the second day, and the top twenty speakers, were announced. Six teams with SHSID members qualified. Frank also achieved fourth place as individual speaker and Cissi achieved seventeenth place as individual speaker.

On the second day, the teams that qualified entered another day of fierce competition. The teams that remained were exceptionally strong, and everyone did their best. In the end, three teams finished as double-octafinalists and one team finished as octafinalist. It was a very rewarding experience for everyone that attended to participate in this amazing event. Everyone came out with some new skills and experience in debate, cooperation, etc. As Frank Lin said “This was a very challenging event both intellectually and mentally and this has taught me many important things.”
