Grade 7-8: Charity Trip to Suichuan
Grade 7-8: Charity Trip to Suichuan
On the weekend of May 8th, Megan Cui and Steven Sun from 7th grade, and Nicole Zhou and Jeffrey Wu from 8th grade went on a charity donation trip to Suichuan, Jiangxi, along with their parents and Director Ni. The main purpose of this trip was to deliver a RMB 40,000 donation of the Spring Charity Fair to Zhangmu Primary School in Suichuan for their newly setup computer lab. This project was initiated by Maitian Project. With the great help of Jeffrey’s Mom, our trip was finally made possible.
Located at the boundary of Hunan and Jiangxi, Suichuan, Jiangxi is one of the poorest towns in China. It took us approximately 1.5 hours to arrive at the nearby airport. Local volunteers picked us up and brought us to the hotel we would stay at at. During the lunch with the local volunteers, we learnt that the volunteering network was well developed there. In the past 10 years, 700 volunteers in total have sacrificed their time, effort, and money on the people in need, especially in providing quality education to students under poor living conditions.
In the afternoon of May 8th, we went to visit a poor student who was currently helped by a Maitian volunteer. That parentless boy lived in a shabby house with his far relatives. Despite the numerous challenges he faced in life that may prevent him from trying hard at school, he still worked very hard and accomplished greatly at school. Many certificates of excellence were hanging on his wall at home. We gave him a new coat for winter and food for his entire family. After talking to him and his family, we left for the office of the Volunteer Organization of Suichuan. We worked the entire afternoon ordering and preparing items for the next day’s visit to Zhangmu Primary School.
The next morning, the wind and rain that ravaged last night finally ceased. Along the winding mountain road, we 5 cars in totally headed for Zhangmu Primary School, which is located at 1,200 meters above the sea level. There are more than 280 students in Zhangmu Primary School, from preschool to Grade 5. We were happy to see that the infrastructure of the school has been improved a lot; now there will be a new computer lab. After a short welcome ceremony, we 4 and the parents went to different classes and give them lessons or do outdoor exercises. All students were fully engaged and really enjoyed it. We were very surprised by their smart thoughts and agile responses. With good education, every one of them could become great talent. We hope our donation could pave their way to success a little bit. When we distributed the gifts we brought there, the children were very polite to thank us. But we noticed that many of them wore slippers during the cold weather. There are still lots of things we could do further.
After a delay for the whole night, finally our flight took off and headed for Shanghai. With the feeling of care, we finished our charity trip to Suichuan.
