Grade 6: Guang Ci Charity Event
Grade 6: Guang Ci Charity Event
On May 6th, 2016, I and some other students and teachers went to an orphanage called Guang Ci. In this orphanage, there were kids of all ages who were handicapped or disabled. We all volunteered ourselves to go to this orphanage on a Friday and missed a few classes. Guang Ci is in the outskirts of Shanghai, so we needed to take a 1- hour bus drive to get there.
When we first arrived, we saw a little open road inside gates. Beside the small road, there was a playground and a small patch of vegetables. There was also a small building where the children live. Because they were still sleeping, we got to see the kids a little while after we arrived. We went to the second floor, and some little kids ran over to us, with smiling and curious faces looking at us. Many were trying to find a partner. I and my friends saw one girl who looked like she wanted some fun, and we took her outside to play. She was very satisfied by picking the specific person she wanted to hold hands to walk with. Sometimes, she would happily hold your hand tight, then playfully push you away and happy again till she had the right person.
We also did other things, for example, I and my friends read some story books to a girl who seemed a little bit bored, and also watched another boy who sang really well. Then, we started coloring. In the middle of our coloring, one of our teachers came in and said it was time for baking cookies for the kids at the orphanage. We made all sorts of shapes of cookies: heart shaped, square shaped, circle shaped, I and my friend also made a three-layer cake, and a fish! While the cookies were baking, we waited patiently in the “bakery”. The cookies were soon finished and they were delicious! I hope the kids in Guang Ci would also like our cookies.
At the end, an officer talked about the orphanage. He told us that these orphans were from Jiangxi Province. Guang Ci would like to care for them and train them up for some life skills for example, how to bake. The officer also asked us to help spread the word out, so more people can come to visit, and enjoy fun time with the children there. I think the children would like to be visited more often as they don't have their parents with them.
It was a really meaningful event and I felt happy for the kids because they have such a good temporary home and nice people to take care of them. We left with warm memories in our minds and I hope we will visit them again next time.
