SHSID Students Meeting With Professors from SIPPE, SIBS, CAS

On April 27th, 2016, students from SHSID had a meeting with professors at the Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology (SIPPE). SIPPE is one of the institutions of the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences (SIBS), Chinese Academy of Science (CAS). The teachers that went along with students were Ms. Gu Ying and Ms. Yao Shenghua. Four students are from grade 11, IBD students, and they discussed their IB Biology extended essay with the professors. Students’ research topics include microbiology and botany, such as “Study on the salinity resistance of Salviniarotundifolia”, "The effect of different types of fruit peels as natural fertilizers on the seed germination and growth of Glycine Max”, and“The Effect of Temperature of Food Preservatives on E. coli growth”. With prepared research background information, students communicated with their mentors about their research questions and research methodology, and received constructive advice from the professors. Other two students come from 8th grade. They are members of the Science Guru club, and went to SIPPE for a long-term summer biology project. The professors and the students had a conversation to discuss the potential research area and research topic that might be carried on in the summer. The meeting ended very well for both sides, the students were able to go deeper into their projects and produce better works than before!
