Grade 9 & 10: Girls Power Tech with Cisco
Grade 9 & 10: Girls Power Tech with Cisco
On April 28, 2016, a dozen of grade 9 and 10 girls in SHSID paid a visit to Cisco for the event “Girls Power Tech”. Sponsored by the company, this event aimed at giving young girls a chance to explore trends and careers in the tech industry.
In the morning, the girls were shown some hi-tech equipment and devices in special function rooms. One of the most impressive devices was a screen in a meeting room, which would show the face of the current speaker. The camera on the top of the screen would detect the voice and the face of the talking person, and then turned itself to that speaker for the attender in the meeting who would then know whose voice they were listening to. All of the equipment and machine illustrated how important and useful technology was nowadays. Then, the students were given two lectures, emphasizing the significance of technology in modern society.
A female manager in Cisco kicked off the afternoon session telling the girls about her successful career in the field of technology. She encouraged that females should be more confident in such industry. She also conveyed the idea to the students that more women should pursue working opportunity in this field.
Last but not least, the girls had a one-to-one Q&A section. They asked questions to the employees in this company, such as how to prepare in the high school and university in order to work in technology fields in the future. The students appreciated the chance to be shared with valuable experience and have a better understanding of the working prerequisite and conditions.
The students enjoyed the one-day trip to Cisco, which brought them more inspirations and aroused their interest in working with the power of technology.
