Grade 7-8: Egg Dropping Competition

The damp weather of March 31st did not affect competitors’ enthusiastic hearts. Seventh and Eighth Grades’ Egg Dropping competition was held simultaneously along with the annual Science Fair.

Around two thirty pm, all the competitors gradually arrived the middle school cafeteria, each holding their carefully packed eggs. It was not long until student helpers called for all the competitors to get number cards. The rules for the competition were fairly simple: The egg cannot be broken after being thrown out of the third floor cafeteria window. Also, targets were being set on the ground outside on the first floor, the closer the competitors’ eggs hit the “bull’s eye” the more bonus points they would earn. The student with the lightest package, the most points and an unbroken egg would win the competition. There would also be a prize for the student with the most unique idea.

There were tons of amazing and imaginative ideas in this competition. Some students used their Physics knowledge in their masterpieces, some even put their eggs into bags of chips in order to reduce the force that squishes the eggs……

As a participant of this competition, I was surprised by the student helpers’ high quality decisions. There were only two teachers assisting in this competition: one teacher helped weighing the eggs and another teacher helped unpacking the already-thrown eggs, and left all the other works for the student helpers. It was like an assembly line, the participants knew where they should be going from stations to stations and all lined up patiently in single files. It was a great success.
