Grade 8: The Optional Creative Writing Class

A creative writing class has opened this semester, providing students with the option of honing their writing skills. By only our third class, everyone had at least two short stories written, and multitudes of fun activities were going in class. For the class held on Wednesday, March 9th, Mr. Jordan, the instructor, initiated the students into their next writing project—another short story.

He started by playing a song for the students, making them think of a character using the mood and tone reflected by the music. In the sharing time after the characters were shaped, it was observed that although people heard the same song, the characters they developed were quite different from each other.

After shaping their characters, the students were given another song, this time to shape their setting, including elements such as where and when the story was going to take place. Mr. Jordan ended the activity by passing around a certain key holder with an animal attached to the object. He made his students shape their second character by using the animal as a sample.

With this activity, the students were able to learn that imagination is something important, and with imagination, anything can turn into an interwoven chain of story.
