Micro Film 'SHSID Volunteers at Hong Mei Primary School' Released

Last semester, many SHSID 11th and 12th grade club leaders and their members became teachers: teachers to the primary school students at the Hong Mei Primary School. Clubs such as the Paper Folding Club, Nexus, E&A, ETC, Jungle, FDPD, and Soccer Club all contributed weekly lessons from 3:00 to 3:40 on Fridays. The class periods covered everything from academic to physical education. The weekly visits were a surprise and challenge to many when they addressed the expectant students. In the words of Bonnie Lai from Fashion Design and Portfolio Development club, “The kids at Hong Mei Primary School have unlimited energy when they are learning the lessons.”

With the help of Mr. Ma and Director Liu, SHSID students created lessons plans. However, the students learned that keeping a class of energetic primary students focused but also quiet was no easy task. Some of the experienced club leaders even promised to never chat as they did in class again because of the students excited chattering distracting the class. But the energy and curiosity of demonstrated inspired the high school students to be just as creative in their interaction with them.

The feedback from the students has been overwhelmingly positive and this semester, SHSID students will continue to visit and teach at Hong Mei Primary School. Besides, the micro movie ‘SHSID Volunteer Base at Hong Mei Primary School’ was released at the new semester’s opening ceremony.
