On Wednesday,March 2nd, a group of 12 students from ninth and tenth grade went out of school in the afternoon to experience work at a Fortune 500 chemical company. After a long bus ride, the students stepped foot into the R&D center of DOW Chemical in Zhangjiang. The building itself was like no other: bright sunlight shone into the building, the openness of the office inviting students. After a short introduction of the history and mission of the company, students split up into pairs and exploring different features and areas of the company with a mentor. The mentor explained what the company does, how it functions, and what it would be like to work in the respective departments of the company. The company, is divided into many departments such as human resources and development. Students discovered the differences in the employees’ work: the offices where the workers had their routine jobs, the labs where different paints and chemical products were developed, and even the break areas where the employees could relax. After going through an interesting tour around the company and the labs, each group sat down with their mentor to have a coffee and discuss their future interests. At last, all the groups gathered and each student shared their thought upon visiting the company. All in all, this was an amazing experience to have.
