Grade 8: The International History Bee and Bowl Competition

On February 28th, the SHSID history club sent out 5 teams, 3 teams for the middle school division and 2 teams for junior varsity and varsity sections, to participate in the Shanghai Round of the International History Bee and Bowl Competition hosted by the Shanghai American School in its Pudong campus. This global history competition features the Bee, which is for individual students, and the Bowl, which is for teams. Last year, the school sent out teams to participate in this global competition for the 1st time, and the middle school team was the champion in the Asian Round. This year, as the teams have grown larger and more experienced, the players were all itching to have a go. The teams arrived early in the morning, and competed in competitions all through the day. Some of the other school teams present included WCLA, SAS etc. In the end, the first 3 in the bee and the first 2 in the bowl were all from our school. Frank Jingxuan Lin won 1st place in the bee, while our team C won 1st place in the bowl. It was really an extraordinary event. As Mr. Thompson, one of the coaches said “Many players exceeded their personal expectations. Aside from the academic side of the competition, the players also learned a lot of other things". One the players, Toby Chan, said “I learned a lot: how to confer, how to work with others. This is wonderful experience”.
