Pudong Grade 1: Adventure in Antarctica

This semester our students had the amazing opportunity to make contact with scientists working with theAnesthesiaCenterfor Critical Care Research atMassachusetts GeneralHospitaland Harvard medical School in Boston (USA). These scientists were stationed at McMurdo Station inAntarcticafor several weeks in order to determine if altered Nitric Oxide (NO)-cGMP allowed Weddell Seals to dive deeply and for prolonged periods of time.

Our students were able to ask numerous questions, including ‘Why can they breath so long, for 90 minutes?’, ‘What clothes do you wear?’, and ‘How do you get there?’. Emmanuel (Manu) Buys Ph.D. and his team were glad to answer these and more questions, and even included some fun and amazing pictures!

This was an eye opening experience for our grade 1’s, as they were able to see the real world applications and rewards of scientific experimentation. Buys and his team have applied for a second deployment toAntarcticain the near future, and students at SHSID will again have the opportunity to work with these scientists!
