Grade 11:Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) Visiting

On the afternoon of December 4th, the Investment Club held a trip to Shanghai Stock Exchange(SSE); the trip consisted of a group of ten students led by Ms. Ye. Shanghai Stock Exchange is one of the only two stock trade centers in mainland China, the 2nd largest stock exchange in Asia, and it currently holds over 1000 listed companies worth a total over 350 billion Yuan. This trip was the first interaction between SHSID and Shanghai Stock Exchange and it opens up a rare opportunity for those interested in finance. The trip consisted of two parts, the visit of the trading platform and the history overview.

Firstly we visited the trading platform, which consisted of over 50 trading computers, 4 enormous screens showing real time trading information, and a gong that owners beat when their companies are listed. Our guide explained to us how a usual day at the stock exchange goes, a recent trading tactic they are using to stop the market from dropping or rising too fast, and differences between the New York Stock Exchange and the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The group had the honor to try and beat the gong and take a group photo with it.

The history overview contains some of the most valuable stock history in Chinese history, including the first stock issued byChina, the first stock Shanghai Stock Exchange sold, etc. The platform also contained precious photos of some ofChina’s leaders visiting the stock exchange; a recent example would be President Xi Jinping’s visit on September 2007. The guide explained to us how the stock exchange changed from what it was back in 1990 when it first opened to what it is currently.
