Grade 12: Fire Drill

Wednesday October 14, 2015 was the first CAS class since before the October break. Scheduled during this CAS period is the annual fire drill. In addition to the fire drill, the school invited a firefighter to give us a lecture on safe escape and a to-do list for when there is a fire.

At around 14:25, the fire alarm sounded, and all seniors calmly filed out into the hall, walked through the back door, and gathered before the Yi Fu building. At the same time, a whole class of students was “trapped” in a second floor classroom. But don’t worry: by now, the firefighters have already propped up their ladder against the wall of the building and one of them was at the second story level maneuvering a student around the ladder. An important thing to note is that, as explained by Director Liu on behalf of the firefighter, the ladder had been purposefully placed half a person’s height over the window sill, as per the rules.

Students then went to the lecture inside the auditorium. The firefighter presenting the lecture played several informative videos about the uncontrollable nature of fire and the correct way to use a fire extinguisher. The presentation itself reviewed several cases of fire accidents in the past and proper ways to react and act during a fire. The most important thing to take away from this lesson, then, is to always think before you act!
