Grade 6 Fire Drill:Why It Is So Important

Students rushed towards the staircase pressing wet pieces of towel over their noses and mouths. Carefully making their way through the crowded corridors, everyone headed quickly towards the fire exit, trying to avoid the smoke in their eyes. Students, along with their teachers, lined up according to their homerooms. Once everyone had arrived safely, teachers led their students back to the building.

On September 17, the first fire drill of the semester was held in the Middle School section of SHSID. The drill surprised most of the students and some teachers, by suddenly taking place during subject classes instead of the routine CAS/Health class. Even though it took most students by surprise, everyone made it out quickly and safely.

The fire drill took place during the subject classes mainly because the school felt the need to prepare students in the event of a surprise. Since a true fire disaster happens as a “surprise”, the teachers decided that having an unexpected fire drill would better test the students’ reactions. This might help students act quickly and could save lives in the future.
