Informative Lecture on Learning Disabilities

May 13, 2015

On Thursday, May 7th, Shanghai High School International Division was fortunate enough to welcome Dr. Diane Slonim to present an informative lecture on Learning Disabilities (LD). As a current Adjunct Professor of Special Education at Manhattan College in New York City, Dr. Slonim shared her expertise on how to identify students with LD issues, as well as how to most effectively correct them. Her lecture focused primarily on how language LD can be recognized in both a student’s native language and their secondary language. She then drew a correlation between these issues and the common attention deficit that accompanies students with LD. The suggested information and techniques offered SHSID teachers and administration new ways to consider how to best handle struggling students. Our staff was privileged to participate in this event and gained a better understand of the current conditions surrounding LD. With Dr. Slonim’s 20 years in the field of Speech and Language Services, there was much to be gained from her experience.
