WSC Regional Round----Shanghai

WSC is a competition that covers all aspects of art, history, literature, science, and social studies. It doesn't only focus on particular subjects but also on teamwork and debate. The competition starts off in different categories. This year’s WSC Shanghai Regional Round had a special meaning for the students in our schools: the competition was hosted by SHSID.

This time for the junior section they started off with team debate. Team debate is three different debates against three different opponents. The resolutions for this time were that women would make the best superheroes, dogs and cats should revolt against their masters, and we should develop technology that allows children to choose their speed of growth. The debates held the usual format of opening speaker, rebuttal, and summary. The next event was Collaborative Writing. Each team was given six statements to choose from, each statement from a different subject area. Each member of the team chose one topic then they were allowed to discuss and research it for the first 30 minutes, then 45 minutes to write and the last 15 minutes to edit and revise the work. The essays were then graded afterwards to add into total points. After the writing was the Scholars’ Challenge. This is a basic test with questions from each subject area that you were provided with to study. At the end of the Scholars’ Bowl, each team was provided with a clicker. Questions in the style of quiz bowls were presented to each scholar. Each team was to work together and come up with an answer. Each question was in multiple choice format.

This year, our school won many awards. Andrew Mi from class 7(1) won the overall highest-scoring individual award and came in first place in the Overall Scholar’s challenge for the junior division. Te champion team of the Junior Division Scholars Bowl was team 131 from our school, making out of 8(5) Kaiser Ke, 8(1) Jenny Feng, and 8(1) Amelia D. This team also won the overall championship for our school. They will be proceeding to the global round in PWAla Lumpur. As alpacas like to say “PWA!”
