Grade 11 Company Visit: Institue of Plant Physiology and Ecology, SIBS, CAS

On April 8th, SHSID organized a visit to the Shanghai Institute for Biological Sciences in order to let students have a better understanding of their future career choices in the biological and environmental fields. In their visit to the institution, students were given the chance to interact with some of the administrative researchers there, and learn about one of the largest experimental control labs in Asia. These temperature-controlled labs house a variety of plants, such as rice, tobacco, and the Arabdopsis Thaliana, which is a stout plant with very short growth cycles that make it an abundant source for experiments. In addition, students were allowed a visit to the institute’s insect museum to observe the diverse insects and arthropods that inhabit the environment around them. This provided a chance to understand the ecological cycles between organisms that build the biological community. Overall, students thought this was a fruitful experience and that they were able to benefit and broaden their understanding of the world.
