Grade 11 Company Visit: MWE China Law Office

On April 8th, one group students from 11thgrade went to MWE China Law Office for this years’ company visit. Through two lawyers' recounting of their personal experiences and insights, students gained not only a better understanding of the inner workings of the law firm, but also a renewed interest in complex issues of justice and morality.

The first lawyer, Henry Chen, opened the discussion through an introduction of foreign-oriented law that evoked spirited student participation. Our students gained a better understanding of the qualifications necessary to become a lawyer and they also learned basic linguistic distinctions and strategies that are critical to diplomatic interaction with a client.

The second lawyer, Ping An, deepened the discourse through offering two anecdotes of his experiences as a trial lawyer. In the process, he broached complex issues of justice and morality, offering personal beliefs to draw student responses. Ideas such as equality before the law, moral obligation, and the foundations of justice were all drawn out through vivid debate and examples.

Finally, the head of the human resource department grounded the discussion through delineating the hierarchy within the firm. She also gave a brief tour of the offices and workspace, where associates were hard at work.

This experience has greatly contributed to the students’ understanding of and interest in law as a career path.
