SHSID’s Unveils First Ever Student Organized TEDx Event

On Saturday March 14, 2015, Shanghai High School was proud to host its first ever independently sponsored and organized TEDx event. TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) first began as an annual conference in 1990. In the spirit of TED’s mission, which is “Ideas worth spreading”, TEDx was created to encourage and support independent organizers who wish to create TED-type events within their own community in order for member of the community to come in contact a wide range of topics within the research and practice of science and culture.

TEDxSHISD was co-organized by Ms. Sarah Lin from 11(8) and Ms. Elaine Shen from 11(5). Over several months, the two worked to plan, organize, develop, and implement SHSID’s first ever TEDx event. Over the course of several months, both worked to organize the event and locate speakers to coincide with the various topics that they wanted to see addressed. Elaine was instrumental in the organization and publicity of the event, with the essential task of finding speakers handled by Sarah Lin.

They contacted several members of both the SHSID community, and Shanghai at large to find possible speakers that would present innovative and creative ideas. A wide range of speakers were contacted in order to ensure a variety of topics would be covered. Centered on philosophy, education, science and technology, environmental concerns, gender equality and the rights and actions of the LGBT community, as well as invest banking and corporate operations in an ever expanding domestic and international community each speech was engaging and innovative, highlighting and focusing on a divers range of issues that are faced by contemporary society.

TEDxSHSID was the first event of its kind at SHSID thanks to Elaine Shen and Sarah Lin, as well as the numerous volunteers and support from both in and out of the school. Driven, determined, and dedicated, the event was a success, with a variety of community members attending the event. While, small, it was still a success and SHSID looks forward to such events continuing in the future, with future alum working with the same determination and drive as Elaine Shen and Sarah Lin to promote those ideas that are worth spreading.

As of January of 2014, the TEDx library contained over 30,000 films and presentations for over 125 countries. Elaine Shen and Sarah Lin are proud and honored to be able to help in contributing to such an important and ever growing library with the help of speakers critical to the success of the event.
