8th Grade College Orientation Presentation

During grade 8 CAS class last Thursday, college counselor Ms. Zhang and IB/AP coordinator Ms. Jiang delivered a presentation on going to college.

Ms. Zhang gave a presentation titled, “How will you apply to college?” covering paper application, and online application, with several examples and websites. She discussed TOEFL/IELTS/SAT/ACT, application fee and school transcript, graduation certificate, IB/AP certificate and recommendation letters. Her speech also included factors that affect how we apply.

Ms. Jiang discussed IB and AP courses, explaining that SHSID students consistently achieve above average. As 8th graders, we should be preparing for high school. Academic challenges in high school included elective classes for 9th /10th graders; IBD/C program, AP and school elective courses for 11TH/12th graders. AP is the advanced placement program endeavor between school and universities as US based college credit and recognized for US top universities. AP does not have a specific combination. IB is the International Baccalaureate. It is a European program and is recognized by universities globally. It is specific and limited.

The speech ended with a video, Welcome to Harvard. You have to try to be special to be welcomed to this kind of school to show their diversity.

Zhang Li and Ms. Jiang both conveyed the idea that we should be happy and responsible for our own future and time won’t wait for us.

All of the students found their speech inspiring and stimulating.
